Subject opinion to coercion: whom will you make your inquisitors? Fallible men, governed by bad passions, by private as well as public reasons. And why subject it to coercion? To produce uniformity? But is uniformity of opinion desirable? No more than of face and stature.

Predictions: 2008

We thought we would prepare for the new year with some predictions, starting with the economic chaos.

Having watched Countrywide and hearing anecdotal stories about continuing lending practices and liquidations, we do not see how they can make it through 2008, especially when this whole mortgage mess is to worsen. So, our first prediction is that the giant over-lender Countrywide will be no more.

Is this a bad thing? Well, has any company done more to artificially inflate the cost of housing in the state of California than Countrywide?
